Thursday was my first time teaching art again (I took a break from it a few months ago when I started full time at the Hein Academy). I had missed my students a lot so it is a treat for me to have some of them returning! Class started out with a demo by me and then the students went to town drawing from a live model...I think they did a great job!

Have you heard of or ever been to the 300 Plates show at Art Access Gallery? It is fun, affordable, and a little bit crazy (click on above link for more info) and I am thrilled to be participating in it this year. I picked up my plates on Monday and sanded them down yesterday. This is what they look like now. I will update you on my progress as I turn them into some great art. December Drawing

I haven't mentioned the Hein Academy for a while, but that is where I am spending the majority of my art time each week. Jeff Hein teaches in a master/apprentice style and it is a privilege to study with him. Since going full time I have been able to watch him overcome challenges in his work. I find it refreshing to learn from someone who will not take shortcuts, even if it means starting over completely on a painting until he gets it just right. I have learned more from Jeff in a short period of time than I have from any other instructor and I now find it easier to be accurate in my paintings and drawings. What a great opportunity it is to have his school so close to home!

I love this painting. A mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a sacred experience and opportunity. On completing her mission to Brazil Sister Ward bore her testimony of the woman she had become as she carried our Savior’s name on her heart. She strives to continue to do so even though the name tag is no longer there. This painting is a tribute to her, to sister Noyce (also in the painting) and to all missionaries who proclaim the gospel and carry the Lord’s name on their hearts.

Kellie is the sister of a friend and her death 3 weeks ago hit close to home. I had a hard time working through the emotions and didn't know how to talk about it so I chose to paint her. She's a beautiful and funny girl (much like my own sisters) with an incredible family. I am grateful to know that death is not the end of life.

Artist Presentation

I had a lot of fun today presenting at Eastmont Middle School for their Career Exploration program. All the students had a choice as to where they could go during that period so I was especially grateful to those who came to my classroom.

I spoke on what it takes to become a professional artist. We discussed schooling, traveling, being self motivated and creating your own business. My littlest sis was my assistant for the day and she did an excellent job. I also reconnected with a few of my former students. I get so pumped on days like these because I love to share my passion with others. Thank you Julie and Lauren for the fun opportunity!

Do you ever find yourself amazed when a small object brings back a flood of memories? "Tick-Tock, Grandma's Watch" is the first of a series of still lifes that evoke memories of my grandmother. It is my hope that through this series I will celebrate this woman's life as well as find a sentimental connection with each viewer.

A child of the Great Depression, Grandma never threw anything away. Though this watch is of little monetary value it is a tribute to how Grandma valued her belongings and treated them with great care--no matter their worth.

As a farewell to summer I decided to hurry and finish this plein air painting I started a month or so ago. This is my first attempt at a plein air oil painting and I am pleased at how it turned out. I can definitely see why so many artists choose to make this their focus. Being outside in a quiet spot for hours at a time doing what I love most was peaceful to say the least. Thank you to my neighbors whose property I was on, and thank you to the babysitters who freed up my time.

Some of my family was injured in a car accident two weeks ago and I have taken time off from the studio to be with and care for them. I am so pleased that they are doing better and that all survived. It has been hectic and difficult but I am ready to pick up where I left off. Here is a look at my most recent figure drawing:

Also, for you scripture readers out there....I just finished reading the Book of Mormon while highlighting every reference to Jesus Christ. I am now starting the New Testament as I look for references of women who surrounded Christ's life and ministry. I would love to paint a large series of these great women.

Not sure what to pick? Here are a few I've done in the past:

Families, brides, landscapes, murals, pets, yourself, a deceased loved one, a family heirloom, etc.

How it works

I'll work two ways: from life or from photos. If from life, the model must be able to sit still for long periods of time (this is no problem for a still life :) ). If from a photo, I usually like to take the pictures myself and I don't work from photos taken by other professionals. However, if you have a picture you are fond of, I will review it and determine if it is something I can work from (I've done this many times).

I will work on commissions in the order I receive them.

Now friends, don't be mistaken by my lack of pictures and posts. I am actually quite busy these days rushing from my studio space at the Hein Academy to caring for my baby, and fighting for time in my studio at home. I am so grateful for the support my family is giving me as I am pursuing my art goals. I am especially grateful to my patient Little Guy. He sometimes accompanies me to the Academy studio.

Jeff has deemed him the studio mascot. He is seriously such a good kid and I am lucky to be his mom. You can see some of my assignments in the background. My main focus right now is on getting shapes as absolutely accurate as I can while also working on perfecting values. I started out by doing a self portrait so that I have a beginning drawing to compare to when I complete the program. I was able to skip the first stage of black and white shapes and now I am working on what we call "fuzzy faces".

I just stumbled across these pictures from a mural I did 3 1/2 years ago. This project was a serious time commitment and really fun. I had the freedom to be creative and basically do what I wanted. The painted house is similar to the actual one the mural is in. Some of the kids who would be playing in this room chose animals they wanted. If you look closely you will find: a rabbit, a squirrel, a mouse, a bird, Verdi the snake, a ladybug, a butterfly, and a fox!

And.....The day I finished the mural was the day I got engaged!

Thank you to all those who have already made it out to see one or both of my shows. You are wonderful!

So back in Italy, I bought some beautiful Maimeri oil paints. I am quickly running out of each color now. They are available here, but are much more expensive so every time I go to buy some I tell myself it would be better to buy them in Italy (of course!). So if I could, right now I would hop on a plane to Pisa, take a train to the Santa Maria Novella train station in Florence, walk down Via Nazionale and wind my way through familiar streets. I would walk past the park I used to go running in, past the phone booth I would call my boyfriend (now husband) from and where a whole bunch of spiders came crawling down on me (worst part of the whole trip!!). Then I would walk past a half dozen pastry shops and remember how incredible they tasted but I wouldn't buy any right then...I would have a better store to go to first.

Walking down Via San Zanobi would bring a flood of memories and I would be sure to pause at building 17 where my apartment used to be on the top floor. I would recall the courtyard on the other side where we would hang our clothes to dry. I would remember watching the fruit tree blossom and grow fruit and I would recall hearing children below playing and rambling in the sweet Italian language. Then I would remember the mosquitoes and how my roommates and I would wake up each morning on our Ikea beds with a new bite or too...and how bad I felt for my roommie when she got a bite on her eyelid. And I'd think of how I loved my roommates and how patient they were with me while I was highly distracted by the boy back home. The smells on that street would vary from sweet focaccia bread, urine and garbage, to Vespa exhaust and a hair salon. Then I would continue my way down the street, pass the charcoal gray z3 BMW that was always parked in the same place, past the circle of gypsy women who chattered away but always left us alone, past the cluster of delicious doner kabab restaurants (anybody know where to get one of those here???) and on to the cobblestone streets of the leather market.

Before entering the market I would pause again to remember the rows produce on the top floor of the Mercato Centrale and how I couldn't stand the smell of meat and fish that hits the nose and instantly turns the stomach upside down. I would stroll through the market ignoring the marriage proposals from vendors as I would note the line forming for the Medicci Chapels where some of Michelangelo's sculptures and cartoons reside. Trotting on in a quicker pace I would take a right passing the first restaurant I ever ate at in Florence and past a couple of gelato shops (mmm....peach! but that would wait till later too...and I would go to my favorite shop across the Arno river and two bridges down). Suddenly I would find myself at the end of the street and in beautiful sunlight--no longer shaded by the buildings built centuries before--looking across the piazza at the famous Duomo. I'm sure I would pause once more. Take it in. Then laugh to myself a bit at my first reaction of it being so colorful that I thought of the slogan, "Skittles, taste the rainbow". I'd walk between the baptistry and the cathedral, noting the replica of the famous baptistry doors. I'd probably walk faster--being so close to my destination--maybe I'd even run at this point, dodging tourists and vendors towards Via Dello Studio. I wouldn't have to read the street sign, I'd know it when I saw it...then on my right, the door to Zecchi's art store! I'd slip in and instantly be at home with the smell of oil paint filling the air. I'd slow way down, browse through the papers, the sketchbooks, the paint brushes and make my way to the back side wall where little drawers contain hundreds of tubes of beautiful Maimeri paint. Yup. That is how I would like to replace each tube of empty paint, one at a time!

This is a shout out to my husband. Just over 2 years ago he finished building me a studio--right inside our home! This is the first time I've had my very own studio. He continues to be incredibly supportive of my art in every possible way he can. He does the dishes, helps around the house, or watches our little guy so that I can have more time to paint. It doesn't stop there! He supports my teaching, helps with my taxes and the business side of all I do (this was a serious obstacle for me at first) so I just want to publicly thank him for his unfailing support! He truly is incredible.

I threw a painting away today. It wasn't working out and I'd lost the freshness it once contained. I felt so frustrated with it--like Giocometti is described as feeling in a book written by one of his models. So I thanked my model for her patience, ate some leftover Christmas chocolate, and used my creativity to make something trivial--a crocheted headband.

Being a mom while pursuing my passion to make and sell art is proving to be more difficult than I thought. It is still doable, and I am doing it, but it is emotionally straining. My sister writes beautiful, inspiring poetry. One of her poems says:

I feel stretched

Like a worn out sweater

Ready to unravel

From the inside out

Pulled and weathered-

Weary

Not sad or lost

Just stretched

This describes my conflicted state. I love my son more than I ever thought I could. I am a mom first and I always will be. I am not afraid to openly state that. I firmly believe this is right and I am living my life accordingly. However, I spend my nights dreaming about making art. Sometimes it keeps me up at night, other times I create it in my dreams. I am yearning to quickly move forward with my gaols but I am told there is a time and a season for everything. I am learning to have patience and be grateful for the consistent small amounts of time I get to spend in my studio.

I am back in the studio now, ready to pick up the pieces from a failed painting and work while my son is sleeping. I will learn to utilize these precious moments afforded me and continue to put my greatest masterpiece first.

I finished this painting last week. It is 20x16" oil on board. It will be part of an upcoming show at Art Acess Gallery in Salt Lake. I'm really excited about how it turned out. I painted it from life and loved every minute of it! I seriously get such a thrill out of painting. Kayla was an awesome model.

I started this piece in the final week of my pregnancy. I hope the everyday objects of shoes helps this piece to relate to others as well. For me this painting is about anticipation, about the protective roll of a mother and the responsibility to raise each child to be independent and walk in their own shoes.

Upon entering the doors of the temple she felt peace. The pearls of wisdom she saw were precious and sacred above all else. They were personal and for her--not to be cast before swine, but to hold near to her heart and bear fruit as service to others.

Back In The Studio

Today is my first day back in the studio since we had our beautiful baby boy. I have always dreamed of being both an artist and a mother. While going through some old books at my parents house I found a 6th grade year book. In the front was a page full of predictions of what each of my class members would be when we grew up. I was surprised to see that even that early in my life I had stated that I wanted to be an artist and a mother. It is greatly fulfilling to be living my dream! However, that doesn't mean this first month has been easy. I have been yearning to paint and create but studio time has been barely out of reach.

Life doesn't get any better than this.

I've got a piece in another show, the first-ever Magna Arts Festival! It is up for two short days, Friday the 27th and Saturday the 28th. Opening Reception will be held at 7:00 pm on Friday the 27th at 9145 West 2700 South in Magna, UT.

If you go you can enjoy good food, music, dancing, a raffle, activities, and more. Events are all day long and there are 12 live bands scheduled to perform. Sounds like a party!

Being creative gives me great fulfillment. This week I've been working on these headbands. My sweet sis is modeling this one for you. I've made them in quite a few different colors. They are hand sewn since I don't own a sewing machine. Even though they take quite a while I've had fun making them! Now back to painting...

I recently finished this painting. It means a lot to me and I am tempted to write all about why I painted it and what I hope you get from it... I will refrain in hopes that you will gain your own, more personal meaning.

I will tell you this much (I can't help it) I believe there is a lasting beauty among women who constantly strive to expand their skills, talents and knowledge as well as balance their many responsibilities at work, church and home.

Easter Weekend

The hubby and I spent a weekend in Bryce and Zions National parks with my family. I couldn't leave my studio behind, so I took it with me. Hope the hotel owners didn't mind...

I learned that this rock formation is called a hoodoo--who knew?

My littlest sis and I suprised the family with a homemade easter egg pinata! We kept it a secret till Easter day.

My sister was determined to make it a very strong egg... it took 6 adults and some good throws to break it open.

Each day as I start out working in my studio I have a routine. Part of that routine includes reviewing my goals for the year. Today, being the last day of 2009, is especially rewarding. I graduated a year ago in December so this year is the first year that I have been an artist on my own. In that time I have set up my own studio (thanks to an amazing husband who built it for me!), started teaching art classes 3 nights a week, applied to 5 art shows, sold paintings, commissions, and cards, worked closely with Justin Taylor and other amazing artists at the Bridge Academy, kept a daily artist's journal, and started this blog.

This year has been incredible. I look forward to even more in 2010. I expect a lot from myself and find life rewarding as I work toward these goals.

Thank you to each of you who has played a role in helping me to realize my dreams. You know who you are and I am very grateful for you.

Meyer Show

It feels so good to draw and create. I could do it all day, everyday, for the rest of my life. And the added plus is that I am learning as I do.

The Apron

While I was studying at BYU Peter Everett would say that his brushes made him feel powerful. For me, I feel powerful when I put my apron on. It is like a trigger--as soon as I slip it around my neck I'm on fire--doing what I love most. I'm productive and focused. So tonight I was getting frustrated with my painting. Why wasn't it coming together, what wasn't right? When I stepped back from my easel I realized that my apron was on inside out!

I'm curious. Do any of you have something that makes you feel stronger?

First off, Thank You to all who made it out to the show! It meant so much to have the support and I hope each of you had a good time.

Also, it was Justin's birthday today, so we wanted to let him know he is appreciated. Happy Birthday Justin.

And last weekend I enjoyed an art trip to Santa Fe and Taos, NM. Great place, good food, and fun people.

Park City Outing

I spent Tuesday morning and early afternoon doing some plein air watercolor painting with my friend Meg. She owns a condo in Park City and invited me up to join in on the fun. It felt incredibly good to paint just to paint. Here is a peak at what we did:

I did this at almost every picture that I liked in every museum we visited in Europe. I ran out of paper. And my dear husband was so patient, I'd find him waiting on a chair at the end of each hall or room. He didn't take nearly as long and I would lose track of time.

Have I seriously not posted since March? Wow. Just wanted to let you all know that I have been in Europe the past two weeks seeing some of the world's greatest art! I find inspiration and ideas from studying great works of art in person and I am grateful for the opportunity to travel. I'm excited for the many projects that I now have ideas for...and I wish I could do them all! I am even more excited to be back in my studio.

This week I had the awesome opportunity to put together this victory logo. It will be printed on a tee shirt for a team in the upcoming MS fundraiser walk in Salt Lake on April 11th.

This is a picture of my beloved studio space at BYU. I sure miss it, but I am happy to announce....

That my new studio space is now finished! Walls, paint, trim, and all. This pic shows that I am still moving in :)

Artist Reception

On Thursday I enjoyed going to Rebecca Rendon's BFA artist's reception. I have a lot of respect for her and she does awesome, delicate work. I miss painting next to her in the shared studio space at BYU. If any of you want to see her show it is up right now at the Harris Fine Arts Center at BYU.
